Fox TV Exec Brian L. Chambers, Who Worked on 'Bones' and 'Modern Family,' Dies at 56

NY - Lucasfilm's Indiana Jones is coming to social gaming giant Zynga's Adventure World in a big way on Tuesday in what is Indy's first venture into the social game space. As part of a collaboration between the companies that has been in the works for a while, the Facebook game will be renamed Indiana Jones Adventure World, and the whip-carrying hero will be weaved into the game's story, according to Zynga. Plus, the company will on Tuesday launch a new chapter of the game called Indiana Jones: And the Calendar of the Sun, in which players team up with Indy in search of a lost treasure. While they do not control the hero played on the big screen by Harrison Ford, he shows up regularly, gives players advice and helps them collect points. Zynga, which has a filed for an IPO that is expected by year's end, has previously worked with film studios, such as Paramount and DreamWorks Animation, and music stars, such as Lady Gaga and Enrique Iglesias, to offer short-term integrations that promoted new film or album releases and the like. But the Indy partnership is Zynga's first long-term arrangement with an entertainment partner. Zynga had in September said that Indy would come to Adventure World, but hadn't shared detailed plans. "Our Adventure World players have seen Indy in messages before, but this is the first time they can interact with him," Toby Ragaini, executive producer of the game, told The Hollywood Reporter. "And we worked hard with Lucasfilm to get the character right. For example, he is afraid of snakes - just like in the films." The companies didn't disclose financial details of the licensing agreement and partnership. Adventure World has 1.5 million daily and 9.2 million monthly active players, according to AppData. Zynga executives wouldn't say how many incremental players the addition of Indiana Jones could draw to the game. "It felt like a good marriage," Nabeel Hyatt, general manager, Zynga Boston, told The Hollywood Reporter. "This is not a short-term, but long-term relationship, which is new for Zynga. We talked very early on, but it took this long to get it right in partnership with Lucasfilm." Indiana Jones: And the Calendar of the Sun sees Indy join players on their adventure as they trek across the jungle to find the Calendar of the Sun, while a competing group has a head start. The story takes place prior to the Indiana Jones films, around 1934, and includes Forrestal, a rival adventurer mentioned in Raiders of the Lost Ark, as well as some items from the films. In future releases of the game, players will also get access to some of Indiana Jones gear and gadgets, including snake bait, a bear trap and outfits. Why do players not get to play Indy himself? "We take additions to a game very seriously," said Ragaini. "Players wanted to play alongside Indy rather than becoming him, because each player has their own character that is created. Our goal was to allow them to interact with Indiana Jones like in a social experience." Email: Georg.Szalai@thr.com Twitter: @georgszalai Related Topics Zynga Lucasfilm

'Cars 2''Rio''Puss in Boots'With the exception of "Rango," all this year's American-backed large-studio characters occur abroad, varying from "Rio's" beautiful Brazilian vistas to "Cars 2's" whirlwind tour of the world lived on only by cars. Such exotic configurations might not appear surprising considering animation's lengthy tradition of moving auds to foreign mobile phone industry's, though recently, there appears to become a new incentive for telling global tales.First of all, while domestic box office remains relatively flat, worldwide audiences -- particularly individuals within the emerging marketplaces of China, South america and Russia -- are quickly growing, together with the amount of screens."Because the technology enhances, you are able to really embrace other cultures along with other nations in ways which was never done before," states Bill Damashke, chief creative officer of DreamWorks Animation. A just to illustrate is DWA's "Kung Fu Panda 2," which did $653 million, which $500 million was worldwide. Carefully designed and animated as "a version of China along with a celebration of Chinese culture and art," the follow up did great business throughout Asia, he reviews. The way a toon will have overseas affects from writing the script towards the casting of vocal talent. For DWA's "Puss in Boots," that is occur what Damashke calls a romanticized version of The country, "It simply made sense to place Salma Hayek opposite Antonio Banderas. She's an excellent match and it has the best Latin sense of the role," he states. Similarly, "Kung Fu Panda 2" features Asian stars Jackie Chan and James Hong alongside Julia Roberts and Dustin Hoffman. "We wanted a really mixed, worldwide cast," he states.Sony's "Arthur Christmas" was created by U.K. animation house Aardman (of "Wallace & Gromit" fame). "Once they found us it already had Santa's sled journeying in the North Pole all across the globe,Inch states Bob Osher, leader of Sony's digital production division. After 18 several weeks of labor in England, the director, producers plus some crew then gone to live in Sony's Culver City facility, and then again to complete publish-production working in london. "So dealing with an British team from Aardman, who're so well-known all over the world, gave our film a built-in worldwide look and feel.InchWith "Cars 2," Pixar abandoned the essential Americana setting of Radiator Springs in support of a wider worldwide scale, with pit stops in Tokyo, japan, Paris, London and Italia."It had been developed being an worldwide story from the get-pass John Lasseter," states "Cars 2" producer Denise Ream. "He got the first idea on a trip around the globe marketing the first -- together with a few of the humor, like driving around the 'wrong' or opposite side within the U.K."In getting pregnant "Rio" at Blue Sky, Brazilian-born director Carlos Saldanha made the decision around the eponymous city and built the storyline around it, benefiting around the creative team's drive "to understand more about a global and put that had not been done yet," the director states. "When I was writing, I believed about how exactly 'Ratatouille' used Paris so well, so why wouldn't you Rio? It is so photogenic and exotic. After which everything -- the animation palette, the look, the background music -- all just ran naturally from that."Native boy Saldanha is very happy to observe that "Rio" may finish up being the greatest film of the season in South america. "Everyone was so proud to determine a movie set there, while for American audiences, there's much more of a cultural challenge." He notes that after the project was initially greenlit, "We understood it had been just a little dangerous, setting the storyline in Rio. But when we'd managed to get and done all of the trailers and promotion, we simply considered it as being a worldwide movie.""It's certainly ideal for worldwide audiences to have the ability to visit the movies and find out something that's relevant and a part of their world," concurs Ream, who indicates the global trend can also be associated with filmmakers growing their storytelling muscles: "They are well informed in exploring unfamiliar mobile phone industry's, and also the technology allows us to become much more adventurous. From the Pixar perspective, it is all about the storytellers just letting their creativeness really go wild."Osher stresses that animation happens to be quite strong worldwide. "Effective animated films often well outshine worldwide compared to what they do locally," he states. "They are typically named into 40-plus languages, so that they seem like local films, whether you are watching in South america, Japan or Cuba. This is a large edge on live-action films with subtitles."RELATED LINKS Live-action pros blur toon lines Contact Peter Debruge at peter.debruge@variety.com

Darren Aronofsky's Anti-Meth PSAs: Requiem Redux

Darren Aronofsky’s Requiem for a Dream alone might’ve been enough to scare most folks away from hard drugs for forever, but it came out all the way back in 2000, when today’s teenagers were mere toddlers. So as part of the public service program The Meth Project, which seeks to educate (or at least frighten the bejeezus out of) would-be first-time drug users, Aronofsky stepped in to direct four TV spots highlighting the nightmarish consequences of meth use. BE SCARED, KIDS. Aronofsky’s new PSAs are fairly simple, sharing a few key elements: He begins in close-up on the faces of his young teen subjects in quiet slo-motion repose, confronting his potential viewer with a face that reflects their own. Then he pulls back as hell breaks loose, revealing the horrors that meth use can inflict upon the lives of promising, fresh-scrubbed young persons: Ghastly skin lesions, horrific suicide attempts, physical abuse of/by loved ones, emergency room freakouts. This is what the American Skins should’ve been like. Warning: Semi-disturbing. But that’s the point. The Meth Project is an ongoing campaign that previously tapped other high profile filmmakers to create spots. Each “Wave” of shorts approaches the subject with a theme or tagline, showcasing different styles. You can find an extensive collection of previous shorts by Aronofsky (Wave 3 & 6), Inception DP Wally Pfister (Wave 5), Alejandro Gonzlez Irritu (Wave 4), and Tony Kaye (Wave 1 & 2) at the Meth Project Foundation website. Jeff Probsts Syndicated Daily Talk Show Closing In On Deal With NBC Stations

I hear that CBS TV Distribution’s syndicated daily talk show hosted by Survivor‘s Jeff Probst is close to a deal with the NBC owned and operated stations, effectively clearing the strip for a fall 2012 launch. The show, which will cover mostly relationship and human interest topics, had been competing with 2 other syndicated talk show hopefuls, Twentieths Ricki Lake and Warner Bros Bethenny Frankel, for a spot on the NBC O&Os. The acquisition does not affect Sony TV’s Nate Berkus Show, which has a deal with the NBC stations though next season. In addition to Jeff Probst, the 10 NBC O&O will also serve as the launch group for the new Steve Harvey talk show next fall. Meanwhile, station clearances would rule out Probst, a frequent substitute guest host on Live! With Regis And Kelly, as a possible successor to departing Regis Pilbin. This would mark CBS TV Distribution’s first first-run syndication launch since The Doctors.

Sunny (Sseo-ni)

A CJ Entertainment presentation of the Toilet Pictures, Aloha Pictures production. (Worldwide sales: CJ Entertainment, Seoul.) Created by Ahn Byung-ki, Ahn In-ki. Executive producer, Katherine Kim. Co-producer, Lee An-na. Directed, compiled by Kang Hyoung-chul.With: Yu Ho-jeong, Jin Hui-gyeong, Shim Eun-gyeong, Gang So-ra, Park Jin-ju, Kim Bo-mi, Kim Min-yeong, Nam Bo-ra, Min Hyo-rin, Goh Su-hui, Kim Seon-gyeong.As perfect in general day's sunshine, Korean femme-centric ensembler "Sunny" is really a warm ray of motion picture light that brings about pleasure and tears in equal measure. Ably mixing the approaching-of-age and middle age crisis genres, Kang Hyoung-chul's sophomore effort plays something similar to a more potent, nicer Korean version of Hollywood weepie "Occasionally" (1995). Its socko local haul of $47 million will not be surpassed offshore, however the film could glow worldwide, because it explores issues familiar to auds everywhere, although having a distinct kimchi flavor. (Korean dialogue) Pic's pivotal character is Im Na-mi (Yu Ho-jeong), first met like a well-to-do, taken-for-granted housewife who accidentally discovers that her high-school friend Chun-hwa (Jin Hui-gyeong) continues to be put in the hospital with terminal cancer. Thrilled doing old buddy again, Chun-hwa demands that Na-mi obtain former teen gang -- known with each other as Sunny -- together again for any reunion before Chun-hwa dies they've got to do something fairly rapidly, since Chun-hwa is not likely to live a lot more than two several weeks longer.. Na-mi sets to fulfill Chun-hwa's wish by checking in first having a former teacher. As Na-mi walks up the road to her old-fashioned, Kang utilizes a 360-degree pan to leap back two-and-a-half decades towards the eighties, when teenage country bumpkin Na-mi (now performed by Shim Eun-gyeong) was the brand new kid at her Seoul senior high school. The flashback enables the script introducing the entire Sunny crew: feisty youthful Chun-hwa (Gang So-ra), who always had more belief in Na-mi's talents than she ever did foul-mouthed Jin-hui (Park Jin-ju) pretty airhead Bok-hui (Kim Bo-mi) overweight, cosmetic surgery-obsessed Jang-mi (Kim Min-yeong) violent bookworm Geom-ok (Nam Bo-ra) and too-awesome-for-school ambitious fashion model Su-ji (Min Hyo-rin). Each one is charmed to different levels by Na-mi's honest if awkward style. The film cycles backwards and forwards between past and offer effortlessly, handling the seven protags (increased by two) along with a ton of subsidiary figures without ever losing its balance or momentum. While tissue ought to be released at cinema exit doorways, it is the pic's robust humor that puts the hook in. Kang's script handles to provide up a deft depiction of teenybopper existence while perfectly taking the quick changes which have changed Columbia previously 3 decades. Pic's fabulous and funny focal point is really a downtown standoff between Sunny along with a rival distaff gang, their fight coinciding by having an attack on the left-wing demonstration by Korea's Fifth Republic militia. Set to "Touch by Touch" (a track by Austrian group Pleasure, a eighties Korean pop sensation), and happening underneath a theater placard for that anti-communist-designed "Rocky 4," this amusing but breathtaking sequence reps a showpiece for that technical expertise Kang demonstrates throughout. Pic's teen thesps are evenly terrific. Likewise, the thesps who play their grown-up alternatives heartwarmingly embody the mistakes of grown ups whose dreams were unfulfilled. Supporting cast can also be perfect. Clever lensing by Lee Hyung-deok capitalizes around the superb production style of Lee Years old-han, which contrasts the monochromatic sophistication of contempo corporate Seoul using the bubble-gum pop colors from the eighties. Version caught in the Busan fest would be a director's cut that clocked in at 11 minutes more than the version first launched in a commercial sense in Columbia in August. Variations include more vivid teacher-caused violence and much more profanity from Jin-hui than was initially thought in a commercial sense viable. At press time, a bit of music utilized on the director's cut soundtrack, including Cyndi Lauper's "Again And Again," had not yet been removed for worldwide play.Camera (color, widescreen), Lee Hyung-deok editor, Nam Na-youthful music, Kim Jun-seok production designer, Lee Years old-han costume designer, Chae Kyung-hwa seem (Dolby Digital), Lee Seung-yup. Examined at Busan Film Festival (Korean Cinema Today), March. 13, 2011. Running time: 135 MIN. Contact the range newsroom at news@variety.com
